Description
KM 4, one year type, the largest denomination issued for the Province of Canada (Upper and Lower Canada--or Ontario and Quebec) only. Nova Scotia and New Brunswick would join with the Province of Canada in confederation in 1867, before the next coinage was issued in 1870. Quarter dollar size silver coin, with Queen Victoria on the obverse. The coin has been encapsulated by PCGS and graded XF40. The serial number is 31699.40/03887787. According to the Charlton catalog, the unusual denomination was an attempt to bridge from the Halifax pounds/shillings/pence system to a dollar/cents/mills decimal system. By 1870, it was clear that the denomination was more confusing than helpful, so it was dropped in favor of a 25 cents denomination.
