Obv/ Three Ladies are personifying : History, Philosophy and Poetry with Philosophy having a Star above her head. In the exergue : Traduction des Auteurs Latins (Translation of Latin Authors) Rev/ Between two palm branches, there are the name of the all people who translated the Latin Texts in the early 19th Century in order to publish their master pieces under the auspice of Panckroucke Editor. In the exergue :M.DCCC.XXV-M.DCCC.XXXVI. (1825-1836). Please note that all the names are easily readable, even if such a small writing! A masterpiece of engraving !Anyway, remember it would be easier without any sunglasses! Information and bibliography: This RARE bronze medal was engraved by Jacques-Jean Barre (1793-1855). He was pupil to Thiollier, the engraver of the Emperor Napoleon 1st . He was a very prolific medallist and in 1842 he became Mater Engraver at the Paris Mint. He engraved many dies for French coins during this first part of the 19th Century. A bit more about this medal: Charles Louis Fleury Panckoucke (1780-1853) was born in a family of Editors. His Father was a renowned printer and the translation of the texts from the Antique was a gigantic work (we could also say : Art Work. Charles Panckrouke a friend of the greatest Artists in the early 19th C. like David, Ingres. He was also very close to the Emperor Napoleon 1st . This medal (RARE!) shows a very nice example able to understand a bit more the Life of a very Famous Person. Reference: Unlisted in Collignon (J-P. Collignon "La Medaille Francaise au XIXe siecle et l'Histoire" 1989) Comment: This RARE bronze medalis a very beautiful of the Art of Engraving in the early 19th Century. It shows a perfection in the expression and also not a too heavy style. This medal (which is not really common!!) is also in a VERY BEAUTIFUL CONDITION with a nice chocolate patina. Well, really a piece of History! There are an inscription on the edge: " Bronze " (copper) and a mark: "a prow of a boat " ( this French mark was used between 1842-1845 for -bronze, silver, gold- medals struck by this time). This medal is NOT a RESTRIKE and it was struck ca.1842 for the achievement of the " Panckroucke Edition". est. $400/500 & NO RESERVE .
