Description
This is a COLLASSAL 101 mm (4 inch) in diameter, 415-gram (14.6 oz) High Relief Bronze Copper Art Medal – The Congressional Award for Major General Ulysses S. Grant for Battles at Vicksburg and Chattanooga in 1863 (interesting that Gettysburg is not mentioned). The medal was authorized by an Act of Congress December 17, 1863. It was Sculpted by Anthony C. Paquet for a fee of $2200. The original gold medal contained 28.77 ounces (894.86 grams) and was awarded in early 1865. This is an ORIGINAL 19th Century Bronzed-Copper Re-Strike. This is an EXTRMELY RARE medal, according to mintage figures in RW Julian’s Medals of the United States Mint, The First Century 1792-1892, only 120 Bronze 4-inch versions were struck in the 19th century. 20th Century Re-Strikes were produced in a reduced 76-mm (3 inch) size until 1985. The reverse shows and Allegorical Commerce looking down on two views, VICKSBURG on the left and CHATTANOOGA on the right, separated by trophies of war. She holds a plaque labeled DONALDSON in her right hand. Around the whole at the periphery is a representation of the MISSISSIPPI with four steam ships and 13 stars representing the original states. The medal is in AU condition with small areas of high point wear. It may have been cleaned many, many decades ago but has since returned to a rich natural looking milk chocolate color. I will combine postage for winning bidders of multiple items. Look at my other auctions for more quality Medals. Any questions? Feel free to contact me at radray1@comcast.net Payment must be received within 10 days of auction end. Add $16.00 for Priority Mail S/H/I. Allow 7 business days for checks to clear. Money Orders and PayPal also accepted. Full 7-day return privilege. Fla. Residents add 6% sales tax. Postal rates are going up this month. As usual, the 1c rise in a first class letter (which NOBODY mails anymore) is a COVERUP for the REAL rise in shipping and service rates. If your shipping address is not in the US DO NOT use the Pay Now button. I will send an invoice. DO NOT USE THE PAY NOW BUTTON UNTIL YOU RECEIVE AN INVOICE FROM ME. I will contact the winning bidder shortly after the auction end. If you have any questions please contact me DIRECTLY. If you do not hear from me within 24 hours contact me as I could not get through to your address as given on EBAY. FUN LM #714 -- ANA # 201801
