Description
This is an extremely rare 1844 "D" Gold Quarter Eagle, from the Dahlonega Mint, in AU Condition as authenticated and certified by NCS. There are some faint scratches running from the hair braid to the neck. You have to look carefully, and in the right light to find these scratches. We took our photographs in harsh lighting and at the right angle to maximize your ability to see the scratches. This coin is 164 years old, yet it has been kept in nearly uncirculated condition, with no rim dings, tarnish, repairs, polishing, whizzing, etc., etc., as often seen on these pieces. The coin is absolutely beautiful. The color is perfect. There are no pits or porous areas from cleaning, just the light scratches in the area previously identified. In fact, this coin is strongly struck, with even yellow gold coloration, and no irregularities (very rare for Dahlonega pieces). The coin trends at $2,800.00 - $3,000.00 in "AU" condition. Our Buy-It-Now price is $2,250.00. History: The Dahlonega Mint was chartered by the United States Congress and erected in 1837, in the mining town of Dahlonega, Georgia, during the first North American gold rush, known as the "Georgia Gold Rush". The first coins produced at the mint were gold $ 5.00 half eagles in April of 1838. The mint produced coins from 1838 through 1861, until the American Civil War broke out and the Dahlonega Mint was seized by the Confederates. It is believed that some gold dollars and half eagles were minted under the authority of the Confederate States Government. No more coins were minted at Dahlonega after 1861. Because of their low mintage, all Dahlonega-minted gold coins are rare. During its 24 years of operation, the Dahlonega Mint produced just under 1.4 million gold coins. Quarter eagles were made for only 19 years at the Dahlonega Mint, from 1839-1859, with the exception of 1858. Gold dollars were produced from 1849-1861. The lone production year of the $3 gold piece was 1854. Dahlonega (and Sister-Mint, Charlotte) coins often have a different hue from other U.S. Gold pieces, including green-gold and red/orange gold casts, due to the alloy's high silver content, and are typically weakly struck on irregular planchets. As unappealing as this may sound to the uninitiated, to Dahlonega and Charlotte aficionados these traits give the coins charm and character. Regardless of denomination, any high grade Dahlonega gold coin with a good strike and excellent eye appeal is a real treasure and, based on past history, has been a blue chip coin investment.
