History and Significance Normal 0 false false false MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 Francis I Normal 0 false false false MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 Francis I (1494-1547) was the King of France from 1515 and notable patron of the Renaissance. He was the son of Charles, Count of Angouleme and nephew and son-in-law of Louis XII, whom he succeeded at a time when France's rivalry with the Austrian Habsburg dynasty was at its most intense. Within a few months of his accession he crossed the Alps and gained control of Milan by the victory of Marignano. On the death of the Emperor Maximilian I in 1519 he became a candidate for Holy Roman Emperor, but lost the election to the Habsburg Charles I of Spain (the Emperor Charles V). In 1520 he met Henry VIII of England in the Field of Cloth of Gold, an occasion that undermined the power and prosperity of France. From then on, Francis waged intermittent war against the Emperor Charles V. In 1525 he was taken prisoner at the battle of Pavia and only released the following year in return for renouncing Flanders, Artois, Burgundy and all his Italian possessions. In religious affairs he won control over the French church and in general he tried to act the part of a peacemaker; but in the later years of his reign, he allowed the persecution of heretics in 1534, and was involved in the massacre of the Vaudois. Battle of Marignan The Battle of Marignan was a battle fought during the phase of the Italian Wars (1494–1559) called the War of the League of Cambrai, that took place on 13 and 14 September 1515, near the town today called Melegnano, 16 km south east of Milan. It resulted in a victory for French forces. On one side were the French forces of Francis I and some German landsknechts — and, eventually, his Venetian allies — and on the other the mercenaries of the Old Swiss Confederacy, since 1512 in control of Milan, where the nominal Sforza duke, Massimiliano — son of Lodovico il Moro, whom the French had previously defeated for possession of Milan — was under Swiss control. The bloody battle of Marignano was fought to retake control of the duchy of Milan, the French gate to Italy.   For a magnificent history of the Battle of Marignan, please follow this link:http://philippe.houdry.free.fr/Eprints/BatailleMarignan1515_ENG.pdfSource: www.wikipedia.org, http://philippe.houdry.free.fr/Eprints, among others Terms / Shipping / Handling Information Please read and understand our full terms of sale.
