This type was awarded to both US Army and civilian shoots under the authority of the Secretary of War. In 1956 the Army changed to their current badge and the wording on the pendent was changed from 'marksman' to 'rifleman'. This is an original 1926 medal named to William 'Wilbur' Williams. Badge is beautifully hand engraved on the reverse. Badge is pin-back, of three piece construction, weighs 15.8 pennyweight and is correctly marked on the reverse of the pendent at the point on the bottom '14K'.  Badge measure 2.68 inches in height and 1.8 inches wide. William 'Wilbur' Williams was from Michigan and a rifleman of some note. He regularly competed in the National Matches at Camp Perry and held numerous shooting awards, including all of the National Rifle Match trophys as well as being a member of the United States International Rifle team. He was among the first civilians awarded the Distinguished badge.
