Description
REDUCED $25!!! WAS ORIGINALLY $75, NOW ONLY $50!!!! For your viewing pleasure, I have very unique item that was bought in 1967 by a tourist. A typical item produced by some ingenious Filipinos for sale to tourists while visiting the exotic islands of the Phillipines. It was probably hand made, with a nice heavy duty plastic Amfile folder, No. 1780, Transparent Sheet Protector U.S. Pat. 2,592,373 Canada: Patented 1955. The three main eyelets have steel reinforced grommets for extra security. The coins were machine stitched into the folder with some heavy white thread, sealing the contents into the folder forever. On the top, there is a heavy cardboard holder (3 1/2" x 6") with the following: SALVAGED SILVER PESO A Historic Souvenir from the Philippines. There are two salvaged pesos, both 1907-S, in the cutouts for the coins. Under that it has the following: In 1941, to prevent its falling into enemy hands, Philippine government authorities with the help of a U.S. naval unit dumped bullions of Philippine silver peso into Manila Bay. These were salvaged after the war, five years later, off the depth near the island fortress of Corregidor. In the middle of the sheet, there are 5 coins from the early 60's stitched individually into their own slots securely. The coins are a 1964 Fifty Centavos, 1964 Twenty Five Centavos, 1966 Ten Centavos, 1963 Five Centavos, and a 1960 Centavo. All are general circulation coins from the time the folder was made. At the bottom, there is another heavy cardboard coin holder (3 1/2" x 6"), which is holding a very nice 1942-1967 25th Anniversary of Bataan Day Peso. It is in really nice shape, and since this was made in 1967, was probably pulled from a bank or private collection and put in the holder. It has the following: REPUBLIC OF THE PHILIPPINES COMMEMORATING THE 25TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE BATTLE OF BATAAN AND CORREGIDOR. The coin is tightly mounted in its cutout in the center of the heavy cardboard holder. Under the coin are the dates 1942 - 1967. In the left corner, it says PRINTED IN THE PHILIPPINES. In the right corner, it says MINTED BY THE U.S. BUREAU OF THE MINT. In the middle of the holder, around the sewn in coins, are the written words in white BOUGHT THESE IN SEPTEMBER 1967 IN ANGLES REPUBLIC OF THE PHILIPPINES. There is also a sticker with the number 96 in the very top left corner. I would probably say the native Filipino who sold this wrote this onto the holder for the person buying it, since there is a lot of craftsmanship involved, and the native people are very good at making high quality items like this. In the early 1980's, I had a hand silkscreened shirt made in Subic Bay in about 5 minutes, it was an amazing sight to see! A very unique and one-of-a-kind item!! If anyone out there has seen these or made these personally or know someone who made them, please drop me a line, I'd like to hear from you. Thanks for your time.
