The surfaces exhibit attractive original mint luster of orange-tinged reflections and the fields have a smooth and velvety appearance with nothing but an ocassional surface mark limiting the grade of this premium and high-end jewel. Back in 1903 the Philadelphia mint produced a limited mintage of only 227,024 $5 Gold Half Eagles. The larger part of those minted has been lost to circulation or the recurrent bullion melts of the first half of the 20th Century. NGC has certified ONLY 18 examples from this mintage with a GEM MS65 grade, with 9 examples receiving a MS66 grade and 4 examples obtaining a MS67 mark and none higher. With the recent resurgence of popularity for this series, both gems specimens from this mintage have become very scarce and coveted pieces and I believe that the superior attractiveness of this particular specimen is sure to catch the attention of discerning gold collectors.
