Description
These are very unusual, not quite unique (but close!) tokens struck onsite at 1876 for the United States Centennial Exposition--and then in 1877 again for the "new" fair on the grounds the year after the Centennial. The very nicely struck and very small medals read on one side "Struck in the Main Building of the International Exhibition Phila. on the First Steam Coining Press Used by the U.S. Mint." Below, the date--on one piece it is 1876 and on the other 1877! The reverse side is the Lord's Prayer. If you look closely at the medals you will see that there is no difference on the Lord's Prayer side, but on the other, one has standard denticles and the other what may be described as "beads" instead. The medals are both very attractive and very well struck. Each is smaller than a US Dime. Finally, the story of the 1876 dated medalet is quite obvious--it was struck as a souvenir from the world's fair, the International Exposition (not exhibition as noted!), but the 1877 date is harder to understand. The 1876 US Centennial Exposition ended in the centennial year. But local developers and patriots thought it would be a great idea for the city of Philadelphia to host an annual international exposition each year thereafter. Unfortunately, the '77 expo was a failure and it was dropped. It seemed that without the Centennial tag it just wasn't of interest to either exhibitors or attendees. Consequently, these medalets and any souvenir at all from the '77 post-Centennial year are very, very scarce. Your auction here is for BOTH the 1876 and 1877 medalets as described and shown--one price, Two Medalets.
