Description
UNITED STATES COMMUNION TOKEN:  PA, Buena Vista, AR / - / C // blank, Bason-201a, Burzinski-452, from the collection of Lester M. Burzinski who wrote a catalog of world communion tokens now considered the standard reference. All communion tokens are rare or very rare.  This is because, for the most part, each church, first in Scotland, then in other countries, had its own special token so that its members could be identified and all others (especially in times of religious strife) could be excluded from holy communion.  Communion was a special event, usually held several times a year and not every Sunday.  As the Scotts moved to other countries, they took the practice with them.  The earliest tokens were made of lead, then white metal (usually alloys of tin ) although some later tokens are known in other metals, even silver.  In his book, Mr. Burzinski listed 7726 different tokens, the vast majority from Scotland.  In her book on U. S. Communion tokens, Mrs. A. Bason listed a mere 436 different tokens.  Using these numbers as a rough guide to rarity, only about 5.6% of the communion tokens that exist today would be from the United States.  It is a great pleasure to offer a few of these from the Burzinski collection to bidders on eBay.
