Description
bisco5 Store U.S. Bungtown Copper British 1/2 D Imitation ca 1770 This is a SCARCE United States / Canada Bungtown Copper Token circa 1770. These Coins were struck in Copper to Imitate Not Counterfeit British Half Penny Coins from Great Britain during the 1700's in the United States and Canada. These are imitations pieces, and, in America, they are also known as "Bungtown" coins. These Evasion Coins were produced to deceive and gain a profit along with the Counterfeits. To avoid the severe counterfeiting laws, often the loss of a hand, changes were made to the legends and/or designs, and generally produced to give the appearance of a very worn coin that would attract little attention. If the Deceiver was caught, he technically was not couterfeiting, and thus escaped the more severe penalty. They circulated freely in both the U.S. and Canada during this period. In New York State, these were produced in Machins Mills. This Token was struck in Copper and shows the Bust of King George III, but with the obverse legend " Claudius Romanus" instead of the normal British Half Penny Legend. The reverse shows the Irish Harp, but with the legend "Delectatrus" instead of the normal Britannia legend. This Token measures 27 mm in diameter and grades in Fine Condition. Shipping cost will be $2.50, exclusive of insurance. International shipping will be $3.75. Please see our insured shipping policy below.
