Half of the island was a Portuguese colony, dating back to the 1600's. The other half was part of Indonesia, and a Dutch colony prior to that. Unfortunately, Timor has been the site of violence since 1975, first when the people wanted freedom from Portugal-and most recently, when Indonesia fought to unite the entire island of Timor within it's control. Currently, EAST TIMOR is an independent entity, though still beset by dissidents and violence. This coin is from the Portuguese rule period. It is a 50 Centavos coin dated 1970, and is a ONE YEAR TYPE. It is made from Bronze, and is about the size of a nickel.
