Description
First Texian Loan  headed  "Texian Loan."  New-Orleans, January11, 1836. (a few weeks before the siege of the Alamo & the earliest known date for Texian Loan certificates). Cert. No.357 issued to Thomas D. Carneal.   Part wording on certificate:  "Received, of Thos. D. Carneal Thirty-Two Dollars, the First Instalment on a Loan of Three Hundred and Twenty Dollars, made by him this day to the Government of Texas for Five Years, bearing Interest at the rate of Eight Per Centum per Annum, payable annually." 640 acres stated in right border. Printed by Benjamin Levy-New-Orleans. Signed in black ink On the Part of Texas by Commissioners S. F. Austin, B. F. Archer & Wm. H. Wharton. The certificate has the usual "X" cancellation with a triangular portion missing. This certificate has not been framed, clean with no nicks on edges or tears of any kind, slight toning on edge of the two light horizontal folds. In superb condition. (one of the finest examples of this loan I have come across in over 30 years as a collector/dealer & former consultant to "Phillips" of Bond St. & Stanley Gibbons. The Provisional Government of Texas issued these certificates to raise funds for the Revolution & were redeemable for land at fifty cents per acre. Thomas D. Carneal, Robert Triplett, Wm. Fairfax Gray & seven others agreed to loan Stephen F. Austin and the Texas Government $200,000 to finance the purchase of munitions. Dec. 1835.   Austin, Archer & Wharton appointed commissioners by the Provisional Government & responsible for raising support for Texas from the United States during the Revolution. 2nd Mar. 1836. Texas declared Independence. 6th Mar. 1836. Battle of the Alamo ends. 21st Apr. 1836. Battle of San Jacinto. Santa Anna defeated by Sam Houston. Stephen F. Austin b.1793, died 27th Dec.1835 a few weeks after being appointed Secretary of State on Houston being elected President of Texas.  Wm. T. Wharton appointed 1st Minister to the United States.  Branch T. Archer served in the 1st Congress of Texas and was later Speaker of the House.
