Description
2005 Canadian Achievements - 120th Anniversary of Standard TimeA little over a century ago, before the network of railways covered the continent, life held a very local focus. People tracked time using the clock in the church, the town hall or the jeweller's window. And these clocks were set according to the sun's noontime high. But the sun travelled across the sky at about 10 km (6 miles) per minute, so its position would differ slightly from one town to the next - about 1 minute for every 18 km (11 miles) distance east-west. Using Astronimical measurements made at the Greenwich Observatory, Sir Sandford Fleming, chief engineer for the Canadian Pacific Railway proposed that the world be divided into 24 time zones. His system of standard time was implemented internationally on Januray 1, 1885.Specifications:Mintage: 1200 (includes all 5 designs)Unique Laster enhancement6 different "time positions" based on six time zones in Canada as they would have been on January 1st, 1885.Face Value: 300 DollarsComposition: 58.33 % gold, 41.67% silverWeight (grams) 45Diameter (mm) 40Edge: ReededFinish: Proof
