Description
alwashin Store   So Called Dollar HK 245 California Midwinter Exposition       So Called Dollar, California Midwinter Exposition, Official Medal Type One1894 CA, Brass. 33.3 mm. HK 245 Second Finest Graded at NGC MS63. Outstanding HK 245 among the finest graded, with one finer at 64. This is the Official medal of the California Midwinter Exposition with very nice and problem free surfaces.  This medal was mounted mainly to throw people's minds of the recent financial Panic of 1893. Souvenirs from the Midwinter Fair are quite rare. Not only did the fair take place almost 110 years ago, but in 1906 the great earthquake and file destroyed much of San Francisco, including who knows how many souvenirs from this fair. The obverse reads Eureka and is a modification of California State Seal.  The reverse in 5 lines, Souvenir / California/ Midwinter/ Exposition/ San Francisco; below 1894; around The Land of Sunshine Fruit and Flowers.  A very high grade So Called (and "Very Scarce" as such) Dollar/Medal that will be very hard to upgrade. Its most enduring legacies are the M.H. de Young Memorial Museum (which has since been rebuilt in a much different design) and the Park's famed Japanese Tea Garden. It was the brainchild of M. H. de Young, then editor and sole proprietor of the San Francisco Chronicle. In 1892, U.S. President Benjamin Harrison appointed him as a national commissioner to the World's Columbian Exposition which was held in Chicago the following year. An interesting attraction at the fair: The very strange, "Dante's Interno" As described by the fair's official guide: "Situated on the south drive near the Firth Wheel. The entrance to this exhibition is through a Dragon's Head. The interior is arranged in a series of startling and illusory scenes, such as burning lakes filled with dancing skeletons, bottomless pits and other ingenious mechanical contrivances to harrow up the soul, but without the objectionable chamber of horrors. Admission 25 cents." source: www.wikepedia.org, www.sanfranciscomemories.com, among others   Terms / Shipping / Handling Information Please read and understand our full terms of sale.
