Be Happy Smiley Face Novelty Money Bill The smiley face, which represents a smiling human face, is commonly depicted as a yellow button with two dots representing eyes, and a half circle representing the mouth. Although the origin of the smiley is not completely known, the earliest examples of the graphic are attributed to Harvey Ball, who devised the face for State Mutual Life Assurance of Worcester, Massachusetts in 1963. Ball never attempted to use, promote or trademark the image and it fell into the public domain in the United States. The back of the bill pictures the Peace symbol, which was designed and completed in 1958 by a commercial designer and artist in Britain named Gerald Holtom.  The symbol itself is a combination of the semaphoric signals for the letters "N" and "D," standing for Nuclear Disarmament.  In semaphore the letter "N" is formed by a person holding two flags in an upside-down "V," and the letter "D" is formed by holding one flag pointed straight up and the other pointed straight down.
