Description
Ptolemaic Kingdom. Ptolemy X aka Alexander I 101-88 B.C. AR Tetradrachm (25 mm, 14.47 g) SNG Cop-367.Obverse: Bust of Ptolemy X right wearing aegis.Reverse: Eagle standing left on thunderbolt; in field to l., regnal date LII= Year 17 = 98-97 B.C. ; to r. ΠΑ. Minted in Alexandria. Condition: VF. ( Ex Harlan J. Berk)History: Ptolemy X, Alexander (106-88 B.C.), was the youngest son of Ptolemy VIII and favorite of his mother Cleopatra III. He was governor of Cypress in 113 B.C., the date from which he later reckoned his rule. In 106 B.C. he ousted his elder brother, Ptolemy IX, from the throne of Egypt and ruled jointly with his mother until her death five years later. He was an unpopular monarch, and he was eventually driven from Egypt by his subjects and murdered at sea in 88 B.C.
