Ptolemaic King of Egypt. Ptolemy I Soter ( 323-283 BC)AR Tetradrachm (14.07 grams,  26 mm). Obverse: Diademed head of Ptolemy I facing right. Reverse: An eagle standing on thunderbolt. ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ in left field. ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ in right field. Staff of Hercules under Η monogram.Ptolemy was Alexander the Great's  greatest general and closest friend since their childhood growing up in the court of Macedonia. When Alexander the Great was crowned Pharaoh of Egypt in 332 BC, he became the founder of the first Hellenistic kingdom with its capital in Alexandria. When Alexander died, Ptolemy, his boyhood friend and loyal general, succeeded him. The Ptolemaic dynasty was established and ruled for 250 years after his death. Cleopatra VII was the last of these rulers. Egypt became the  personal estate of the Roman emperors. Ptolemy was given the title of Soter (Savior) for his role in saving the country from civil war and turmoil.  All Sales final.
