When Alexander the Great was crowned Pharaoh of Egypt in 332 BC, he became the founder of the first Hellenistic kingdom with its capital in Alexandria. When Alexander died, Ptolemy, his boyhood friend and loyal general, succeeded him. The Ptolemaic dynasty was established and ruled for 250 years after his death. Cleopatra VII was the last of these rulers. Egypt became the  personal estate of the Roman emperors.
