Description
1884 Siege of Khartoum 2500 Piastre note with General Gordon genuine signature. Originally, Gordon signed these notes by hand, but as it would take up most of the night (and the lights were a potential target for Mahdi snipers), Gordon was pursuaded to have them signed by hectograph. When it was found that local traders in Khartoum would not accept them without a hand signature, Gordon reverted to his nightly signing sessions - this is one of those. After the fall of Khartoum, it attracted the death sentence to be in possession of one of these notes until it was found that the Egyptian authorities were honouring them, whereupon they were smuggled out be camel post! Notes personally signed by Gen Gordon are RARE, RARE and of historical importance. Please see scan - it is in GDVF used condition. Very difficult to find and fairly priced. NB NB This lot will require insurance to be included in the postage - please wait for invoice. Over the next few weeks I will be offering a number of fine and unusual notes and bonds - part of a collection. Happy to answer all questions.
