Description
Tin alloy bracteate token dated 1786 issued by a Miss Scott for 'Blind Coal'. Obverse : MISS * SCOTTS BLIND COAL around date. Blind coal is the name that was given to coal that burns without a flame, ie. what we tend to call anthracite today. Nothing is known of 'Miss Scott' and her token is most probably carrier's token used for tallying packhorse loads of coal from the Kilmarnock coalfields to Saltcoats on the coast 14 miles away, for shipment to Ireland. D& W. 290/100; ST700; Mitchiner 5360. 22mm. EXCESSIVELY RARE (RRR) Ex R. Bell col. 1996 Good Very Fine
