Description
Sasanian Shahpur II (309-379 AD) AR Drachm. Obv: Bearded bust right wearing turreted headdress. Rev: Fire Altar with attendants. Dimension: 24 mm Weight: 3.8 g MACW-870. SASSANIAN EMPIRE: The founder of Sassanian Empire was Sassan, the Zarathushti high priest in the Parthian capitol of Istakhr. In CE 200 Parthian Empire was ruled by Vologases VI in Ekbatana and his rebel brother, Artabanus IV ruled the south of the empire from Ctesiphon. Sassan was dissatisfied with the reluctantly Zarathustrian approach of the Parthian nobility and their leaning towards Hellenic influence in religion. After the marriage of Sassan to the governer of Pars province, he persuaded the Commander of the armed forces, Papak, to rid himself of the Parthian suzerainty. Papak with the help of his sons Shahpur and Ardeshir, defeated seperatly first Vologases VI and then Artabanus IV. Papak’s elder son died in a border skirmish and his other son Ardeshir I triumphed and established his rule over the previous Parthian empire in CE 224. By 226 Ardeshir I managed to consolidate his sway over all the Parthian satraps. Altogether 39 monarchs managed to rule Persia for more than 200 years. Sassanian Empire came to end in CE 641 after the last ruler Yazdegard III was defeated by the Arab armies. Shahpur II: Shahpur II (CE 309-379), son of Hormazd II, was crowned king even before his birth.to his jewish mother. The council of nobles headed by Shahroy carried out the affairs of the state until Shahpur II reached a mature age.
