The smooth fields possess a velvety appearance with fabulous luster and the entire surface shines vibrantly with orange tinged mint bloom. Everything on this coin evidences its high grade of GEM MS65 as certified by NGC. 1906 would be the last year of mintage for the Gobrecht's $5 Liberty Half Eagle design for the San Francisco mint. By then production of $5 Gold pieces had dwindled from a high point of 3.6 million in 1901 to a mere 598,000 in 1906. Most of the coins from that mintage would not survive the successive bullion melts and full GEM examples of this mintage are exceedingly scarce with NGC having certified a mere 10 examples with a MS65 grade and ONLY 2 examples with a MS66 grade and NONE higher. Currently, the Collectors Universe website list a conservative value of $6,500 for the 1906-S Half Eagle in MS65 grade.
