Description
SquareTrade © AP6.0 THIS IS A BONUS ITEM The Stocks and Bonds Issued by the Compagnie Universelle du Canal Interocanique de Panama, 1880-1889, and Compagnie Nouvelle du Canal de Panama, 1894 No other book about these two great French companies is as comprehensive relative to a fabulous story-line about the world's greatest financial disaster!!! (The bankruptcies of Enron and Worldcom did not, in today's dollars, exceed the catastrophic financial failure of the Compagnie Universelle du Canal Interocanique de Panama.) The Stocks and Bonds Issued by the Compagnie Universelle du Canal Interocanique de Panama,1880-1889, and Compagnie Nouvelle du Canal de Panama in1894, is a first presentation about every stock and bond issued by these two French Panama Canal companies during their futile attempt to build the Panama Canal between 1880 and 1904. TRULY, THERE IS NO OTHER BOOK ABOUT STOCKS AND BONDS OF TWO RELATED COMPANIES, BOTH FAILING TO COMPLETE THE PANAMA CANAL, SUCH AS THIS ONE. This absolutely incredible presentation, that is unparalleled about its subject matter, has 323 pages of which OVER 150 are profusely and illustrated with charts, vintage prints, and maps. These range in scope from the building of the Suez Canal to the American involvements with the Nicaragua and Panama Canal efforts. More than half of the illustrations are in color. The four principle personalities that surface throughout this book are Count Ferdinand Marie de Lesseps, Directeur-General of the Compagnie Universelle du Canal Interocanique de Panama; Trenor W. Park, President Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt of the United States of America; and William Nelson Cromwell, New York Corporation lawyer of the law firm of Sullivan and Cromwell. Between the 1881-1904, there were 4 Americans who were American presidents of the Panama Railroad Company while it was owned by the two French canal firms. They were: Trenor W. Park (former San Francisco lawyer and adviser to General John Charles Fremont the Pathfinder to the West, Civil War General, owner of Mariposa Estates and first Republican Party presidential candidate), John Griffith McCullough (later Governor of Vermont), John Newton (former Civil War General and Chief, U. S. Army Corps of Engineers), and Joseph Edward Simmons (one time president of the Fourth National City Bank of New York City and subsequently president of the , New York Stock Exchange). The book, which includes images of related bond and stock certificates, auxiliary financial papers, medals, stamps, and graphics, is the most complete and extensive in the world on this scripophilic subject--unequaled. Revealed in considerable detail is the bankruptcy that the Compagnie Universelle du Canal Interoceanique de Panama suffered in February 1889, which, until recently (Enron and World Com), probably held the record for being the worst in the world. The book has an Appendix entitled: The Story Behind the Sale of the Panama Railroad Company to the Compagnie Universelle du Canal Interocanique de Panama on June 10, 1881. This story about an alleged great railroad robberies, which occurred along Wall Street, has never been told in the detail that appears in this book. There are 6 other books that we offer on EBAY that complement this book, they are: The Presidents of the Panama Railroad Company, 1849-1916, The Untold Story of Panama, The History of the Purchase by the United States of the Panama Canal; the Manner of Payment and the Distribution of the Proceeds of the Sale; The Diagrams and Photographs of Railroad Equipment Used to Build the Panama Canal, 1881-1914 and the Opinion of the Attorney General of the United States Upon the Title Propose by the New Panama Canal Company to the United States of America, 1902. The nude shown on the first image was inserted to attract and hold the readers attention. however it does appear in the text as an idea by a Spanish artist for one use of the flood of the still available worthless bonds issued by the Compagnie Universelle du Canal Interocanique de Panama, rather than them being burned needlessly. In the book it is titled: The Goddess of the Gaillard Cut, which is that portion of the Panama Canal which was dug between the Gold and Contractor Hills. NOTE: THE PHOTOGRAPH AND BOND AND STOCK CERTIFICATES SHOWN HERE ARE NOT A PART OF THIS BOOK OFFERING. HOWEVER, COLOR IMAGES OF THEM APPEAR IN THE BOOK WITH DETAILED DESCRIPTIONS. This book is noteworthy for also having a commentary about the number of deaths caused by Malaria and Yellow Fever while the two French companies were attempting to build the Panama Canal. These statistics were compiled by Colonel William Crawford Gorgas, Medical Corps, U. S. Army, while he was assigned to the American Isthmian Canal Commission as its Sanitation Officer from 1904-14. As a BONUS the High Bidder will receive a personally signed copy of this fabulously documented and illustrated book. The illustrations and text of this book have been updated to April 15, 2008. Buyer pays $3.50 for mailing in the States, $4.50 to Canada, and overseas $18
