Description
This is a very rare 1919 issued stock certificate for the Simon Silver-Lead Mines Company, signed by the founder and president P. A. “Pop” Simon. The company was incorporated in Nevada in April 1918. With the principle place of business Mina Nevada.   The stock certificate features a detailed photo of the head frame over the shaft at the Simon Mine on top of a huge tailings pile. I have been to this site, it’s one of my favorite Nevada mining ghost towns, peering down the shaft is breathtaking, you can toss a rock down the shaft and count off the seconds till you stop hearing it.   The Simon Mine and ghost town still be can be found today in Mineral County Nevada.   The Simon Mine was discovered in 1879 and small amounts of silver lead ore were shipped. The area took off in 1919 when silver-bearing lead-zinc ores were discovered. P. A. “Pop” Simon acquired several of the mining properties and organized the Simon Silver-Lead Mines Company.  A post office was also established at the town site near the mine that year.     In 1921 a huge 100-ton floatation mill began treating ore, the mill was enlarged in 1923 to handle 250-tons daily. Also beginning that same year company stock was traded on several exchanges. After producing over $750,000, the mill shut down in 1927.   The Simon Mine Shaft was a 3 compartment 800 foot vertical shaft that had a winze that went another 200 feet making the total depth over 1000 feet. The mine has a total underground workings in the neighborhood of 25,000 feet!   The Simon Mine was reworked again in the 1930's and in 1931 there was a power failure for 18 hours in the Mineral County Power System that caused the mine to flood. While the power was out the water was able to rise to the top of the 1000ft level, drowning out the pumps and short-circuiting the motor in spite of efforts to raise it as high as possible. The mining company was not able to regain the use of this level of the mine.   The stock certificate is in great shape, at the top of the certificate is a rust outline of a paper clip.  I am in the process of narrowing down my collection of mining and ghost town related documents, this is one that I have tossed back and forth on weather to let go or not. So I figure I will list it for what I bought it for quite a few years ago, if it sells, great, otherwise I figure I will just hold on to it. Shipping is via USPS Priority Mail with Delivery Confirmation. Be sure to check out the other ghost town and mining items I have listed.
