Description
Railroad Louisville & Nashville KY 1880 Bond Description Engraved 6% $1,000 Bond issued by the Louisville and Nashville Railroad Company, dated January 20, 1880. Lovely vignette of early train passing through countryside with telegraph poles and river with river boat in background. Trainman hangs out of locomotive enjoying the breeze. Debt was secured by the pledge of 134,000 shares of Nashville Chattanooga and St. Louisville Railway. The railroad line was approved March 5, 1850 but it did not start operating its first line until November 1859 with 185 miles of track. Red overstamp cancelling bond as being paid in less than one year. Coupons 2-8 attached on right side. Signed by Newcomb, vice president, secretary and Edmund D. Randolph, president of Continental National Bank, New York. Excellent condition, low certificate number, only 2,650 bonds were issued. While the number of stock certicates of a company are unknown since new stock certificates are issued and old ones cancelled as the stock is bought and sold, the number of bearer bonds of a company is fixed since the same bond is passed from seller to buyer. A bearer bonds means the holder of the physical bond is the owner and there is no record of who actually owns the bond. With a fixed and limited number of bonds, scripophily collectors have long favored bonds over stocks for their potential price appreciation of the antique certificate. Engraved by American Banknote Co. Payment and Shipping Info Buyer to pay shipping and handling of $2.95.
