Description
38mm, silver, MI II:629/317. Almost Uncirculated. A recent Baldwin's example listed at 700 British pounds. OBVERSE: Bust of William of Orange facing right with long hair in a cravet, dresscoat and mantle fastened with a brooch. LEGEND: WILH. CAR. HENR. FRISO. PRINC. NASS. ET AR. (William Charles Henry Friso, Prince of Orange and Nassau). Below: N.V.S. F. (Nicolaus Van Swinderen , medalist). REVERSE: The Belgic Lion, holding a sword, rests its paw on a pedestal, which supports a book and a spear encircled with an orange branch, and surmounted by the cap of Liberty. The pedestal is inscribed HONY SOIT QVI MAL Y PENSE (Shame to him who thinks well of this). Behind is the rising sun. LEGEND: GLADIVS DOMINI ET GEDEONIS (The sword of the Lord and of Gideon – Judges 7:20) Exergue: HOLLANDIA PROCLAM : GVBERN. 2 MAII. 1747 ( Proclaimed Governor in Holland 3 May, 1747. This medal was most likely struck at Utrecht. This medal shows English support for William. The legend on the reverse infers that as God raised up a deliverer of Israel from the Midianites in the person of Gideon, so did He for Holland from the armies of France in the person of William IV.
