These are uniface impressions (blank back) produced in upstate New York. To adequately evaluate the printing quality, the BEP released "nonsense" plates composed of canceled portions of printing plates from various denominations. The main portrait images are Lincoln, Washington and Grant from the five, one and fifty dollar denominations, respectively. The central motif of the back design comes from the reverse of the five dollar note with the Lincoln memorial. This uncut pair contains an example of the front & back. Intact sheets have never been readily available, even less so today as nearly all have been cut by promoters. With front and back pairs routinely selling in the $400-$500 range on internet auction sites, it is easy to determine the value of this trial sheet to have a potential of more than the high estimate.
