Description
Certificate Number C 1 J. I. Case Threshing Machine Company Features a magnificent color vignette of "Old Abe"   1000 shares, $100 each, issued June 24, 1907 to Frank K Bull.  The certificate is signed by Richard Robinson, Secretary and Frank K Bull, President. The certificate was re-attached to the stub, which is also signed by Frank K Bull, and signed one more time on the back by Frank K Bull.  A gold seal featuring "Old Abe" is affixed to the certificate. The certificate was stamped "cancelled" in 1911 and also has a cut cancellation through the signature of both Robinson & Bull - which is not visible unless you really look for it.    There is a bit of moisture damage in the two outer corners and several fold lines. Just two  miles from where I sit writing this, is the picturesque tiny village of Rochester in Western Racine County, Wisconsin.   Around 1843, J I Case arrived in Rochester and developed a better threshing machine than the ones he had been selling.  He planned to build a plant to begin manufacturing the machines, but was denied the right to erect a millrace and wheel on the Fox River to power his plant.  According to racinehistory.com, the next morning he hitched up and headed to Racine.  ** Rochester side notes:  At about the same time that Case was in Rochester, the Union House was built and still stands.  It is now known as Chances and serves the best ribs around.  (We have no affiliation with Chances other than enjoying the food!).  The building's rich history includes being a stop on the Underground Railroad and it is also said to be haunted.  It's quite likely that Mr. Case would have dined there.   If anyone has a photo of J I Case during his time in Rochester, or specific details as to his location there please let us know.  In Racine, J.I. Case operated his business himself, until forming J.I. Case & Co in 1863, in partnership with Stephen Bull, Robert Baker and Massena B Erskine.  In 1880, the J.I. Case Threshing Machine Company was incorporated.  In 1891, J.I. Case died.  In 1901, Frank K Bull, the son of Stephen Bull, became president, and it is his signature which appears on this certificate. From humble company beginnings in Rochester,  one talented young man created an empire in Racine which continues today as Case IH, a global innovator in agricultural equipment.  This Number 1 J I Case Threshing Machine Company stock certificate is not only attractive with it's color vignette, but a wonderful bit of significant history from the city of Racine.    Your browser does not support JavaScript.
