Description
THIS SHOULDN’T EXIST, AND WHEN I CAME UPON IT I WAS FLOORED! My source of this UNIQUE 20th century silver medal and its origins is MEDALSMAN. 19th century SILVER Presidential/Indian Peace medals are museum pieces commanding prices of $15,000-$25,000 and more. Typically only a handful of each type was made and almost EVERY one I’ve ever seen on eBay was a CAST counterfeit. The US Mint did NOT make Silver Presidential/Indian Peace medals for sale in the 20th century. Or so I’ve thought for over 35 years. Apparently according to JL (Medalsman) a collector in the 1950’s commissioned a unique set (presumably through Eisenhower). What easily sets these medals apart from the 19th century counterparts is the finishing methodology. US Mint medals of the 19th century has very glossy to near-proof like finishes, certainly the silver medals were especially shiny and bright. From WWII until the early 1990’s (a time of high volume for most bronze US Mint medal), the medals were finished with a matte (sandblast) look, which is very obvious with this example. This is a High Relief US Mint Presidential/Indian Peace medal of Millard Fillmore. It is a huge 3 in (76mm) in diameter and weighs 253 grams (8.9 ounces). This compares to an average of 211 grams (7.4 oz) for the bronze version. The obverse was designed by Salathiel Ellis and the reverse was designed by J Willson. This full-figure reverse of a farmer conversing with an Indian was introduced with this presidential medal and was used with the next two presidents. It is in MINT condition. The 3rd photo below shows the obverse this medal alongside a contemporary bronze version. I will combine postage for winning bidders of multiple items. Look at my other auctions for more Quality Medals. Any questions? Feel free to contact me at radray1@comcast.net Payment must be received within 10 days of auction end. If your shipping address is not in the US DO NOT use the Pay Now button. I will send an invoice. DO NOT USE THE PAY NOW BUTTON UNTIL YOU RECEIVE AN INVOICE FROM ME.
