Description
This Potosi eight reales cob was struck in the 1650’s under the rule of Philip IIII of Spain. At that time, it was determined that the Potosi mint assayers were debasing coins in order to steal silver. The assayers were executed publicly and by order of the king of Spain, counterstamps were struck to revalidate eight reales pieces to 7 ½ reales. This historic shipwreck specimen was salvaged from the treasure ship “Capitana,” which sank off the coast of Ecuador in 1654. The obverse features the Spanish shield with the assayer “O” initial to the left and the “P” for the Potosi mintmark above; the king’s name is seen in the legend on the right. The reverse cross is almost complete with the counterstamp appearing off-center. A certificate of authenticity with a photograph is included with the coin . . . an interesting historic specimen that should fit nicely in most collections. (Images may be enlarged or reduced. The size of this coin is 38 mm.) *** Shipping charges will be $3.50 plus $1.50 per $100 value. For shipping outside of the U. S. A., please e-mail us for information and our quotation. Please allow additional shipping time for personal checks, as they must clear before items are mailed ***
