Description
"TODAY'S THE DAY" THIS IS THE REAL THING. NOTHING ELSE LIKE IT ON EBay or anywhere else, I have looked for a coin in as good shape as this one from this wreck all over the internet there isn't one. You will NEVER find a Bezel like this one either. You are Bidding on one Authentic Eight Reale Silver Coin minted in Potosi that was recovered from the Spanish Galleon “NUESTRA SENORA DE ATOCHA ”. On September 6, 1622 this Galleon struck a reef & sank in a raging storm near the Florida Keys. The galleon was returning to Spain with treasures from North and South America and the Orient. These coins of the Spanish-American Colonial Mints (often called "COBS") were very irregular due to the manner in which they were made. The prescribed weight of the 8-real coin, the full unit of measure of the time, was 27.4680 grams of almost-pure (90% or better) silver. Although the majority of the coins produced were 8-reals (called "pieces of eight"), denominations of 4, 2, 1 and 1/2 were also minted, and each was supposed to be one-half the weight of the next largest denomination. The COBS were made by cutting blanks from a piece of silver of the approximate desired weight from slabs of refined silver, then pared down to the exact weight using shears or a chisel, or both. The blank was then heated and placed between two metal dies (for both sides of the coin) and struck hard once or twice with a heavy hammer. The resulting impression was normally blurry and missing part of the image. Mostly the date (like "1622") and the name of the ruling monarch (like "Phillip III"), which were on the outside edges of the coin, were missing or only partially there. No two were identical and therein lies their uniqueness. This coin shows the castles and lions reversed which is typical for Assayer “T”. Coin comes with a Certificate of Authenticity signed by Mel Fisher (now deceased) who found the Atocha on July 20th 1985. Shipping and Insurance is FREE. I ONLY SHIP WITHIN THE UNITED STATES. Payment is expected within 48 Hours from auction's end. Please email me if special circumstances arises which will prevent payment from being made in time allotted. I would be happy to combine shipping to save costs if you win more than one item. Please feel free to e-mail with any questions. Thank you for looking!!! The Atocha was a Spanish treasure ship that sank in 1622, just two days after leaving port. Down with the ship went a fortune in silver and gold bars, emeralds, personal jewelry, along with hundreds of thousands of treasure coins. Spain searched for its ship for 70 years before finally giving up. Not until 1985 was the treasure of the Atocha rediscovered by Mel Fisher and his dedicated team. The find did not come easily -- it was at the expense of 16 years of planning, almost $10 million dollars in equipment, and the lives of three divers. Included with this coin is a one of a kind 14 karat, bezel designed exclusively for Mel Fisher himself. This information came from Lee and Kim fisher as I purchased it from them at a show in Portland, Maine in 1993. You’ll see the coin is wrapped with the wind, two mermaids, one on each side with her hair flowing and grasping a 25 point authentic real diamond between her hands (1/2 ct total). Total carat weight 50 points. At the bottom of the bezel is Mel’s signature treasure chest. Bezel alone is valued at over $8,000.00. The coin that was chosen to be in this bezel was one of the finest that was brought up from the Atocha. This Coin and bezel also comes with the 20 inch 14K SOLID Rope chain that is 42 grams of 56% Pure Gold Valued at Over $2000. This Solid Rope Chain is the only piece I purchased for $1500 in 1993 seperate from the Coin and Bezel. The Coin and Bezel I purchased from the Fishers. I am the only owner of this piece besides Mel Fisher Ever. If this piece doesn't sell you may never see it again as I will probably keep it as I have for the past 15 years now. The Certificate of Authenticity shows the front and back of Coin in two x-ray like photos to GAURANTEED the Coins Authenticity. GOLD AND SILVER ARE BOTH AT A PREMIUM ON THE MARKET NOW AND THIS IS A SURE INVESTMENT. I INVITE ANYONE TO SHOW ME A BETTER PIECE OF HISTORY AND VALUE AT THIS PRICE AS THERE IS NONE.
