Description
Found this medal while metal detecting about 20 plus years ago. One of only 7423 ever minted, this medal was designed by F.D. Millet (an artist who later went down on the Titanic) and awarded to Canal Diggers who worked for at least two years on the Panama Canal. This one has no header and is about the size of a Half Dollar. President Roosevelt and his wife spent three days on the Isthmus in November 1906 and later commissioned the metals. Made of Bronze scrap metal used by the French, the first medals arrived in Panama in 1909. Inscribed along the border it says " FOR TWO YEARS CONTINVOVS SERVICE ON THE PANAMA CANAL". On the bottom is the name of the recepient--J S CATE. This name is just below the bust of President Roosevelt. On the back it says" PRESENTED BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE VNITED STATES (Roman style lettering renders the letter U as V). Below the picture of the canal is the serial number 2632 and 1907-09. A historic piece, as said this was found metal detecting and still is in good shape. These were actually minted in the United States Mint in Philadelphia. Low starting bid and Thank You for Bidding. Item is currently for sale to private collectors and will be pulled if sold.
