Description
This is a prooflike VAM of the rarer 1921 17 Berry VAM 1, and probably unique in this grade. You may call me at 1-559-337-0708 for a complete rundown of this variety. There are only a handful of 1921 PL's that made it to 65 and this is the only VAM 1 I have seen ever. Exceedingly scarce in MS 65. Scarcer than the Zerbe special strikes!! As it was never given out to be saved, just dumped into bags....!! You can make an offer through the ebay offer system....Don't email us for an offer outside of Ebay....You can work within the system like we do...... Notes on the 17 Berry variety of the 1921 Morgan Dollar This is the 17 berry variety of the 1921 Philadelphia Morgan dollar. It has the "dot" after the first 1. Farran Zerbe talked the mint into giving him a "golden parachute" retirement plan of 200 or so special strikes (not to be confused with this much rarer coin) ... Sometimes called the "So called Zerbe" this coin in addition has the dot after the first 1, in the date. Much evidence indicates that these were not struck from Proof Zerbe Dies as is commonly thought, but are circulation strikes struck from dies produced from the same hubs as the proofs. That is why SEGS calls them "So-Called Zerbes", since they are usually frosty like all other normal business strike Morgan’s even though PL's exist. This coin is the best of the PL's, and not to be confused with the common 16 Berry which currently trends for $850.00. Once PCGS wises up to the 16/17 Berry variety (as demonstrable as the 7 and 8 TailfeathersVariety of the 1878 issue) you will see this coin as one of POP 1 or 2 at the very most....As to the The Zerbe Proofs , they have their own die markers, most notably the lines above the U in Unum and other markings identified by that persistent chap, Breen. This coin does not have those markings...And untill we see hundreds of these in MS 65, this coin remains scarcer than the True Zerbes... Not just a whimsical VAM either.....None of the circulation strikes have the Unum markings, so we know that they are not made from the Proof dies as is commonly thought, but from the hubs that made both the circulation strikes and the proof "Zerbe" dies as the rush to produce dollars day and night began in earnest. As to this reverse, there exist more common 1921's with 16 berries in the wreath, and the 17 berries (the so called Zerbe). Of these with 17 berries there typically exist Vam 1 (with obverse/reverse indicators) and the "reverse only", 17 berry variety for which there is presently no VAM number. There are also 4 other major identification factors which prove the Reverse Zerbe circulation strike. Each one of them merits a major variety discovery on it's own: .A. The small 17th berry in the upper right node of the right wreath. B. The stem from the right top leaf cluster is behind two leaves, not in front of them, C. On the 2nd node down from the top node on the right, the left leaf is unattached and never meets the stem, and D. The top arrow tenaciously held by the eagle has tell tale horizontal die scratching not seen on the common 16 Berry variety. There exists also doubling in the "S" of States.....Zerbe Obverse dies often have a small dot next to the first 1 in 1921. All of these varieties exist in PL. (this is the finest I have ever seen) Some have further minor markings attributed to die wear such as die breaks, and die corrosion.... This coin looks like any other PL Morgan from the circulation mintings except it is creamier. There is a lot of interest in this issue right now, as SEGS has identified 5 die pairs of the 17 Berry Varieties and whatever you call them they are very very real and very misunderstood. Ever notice that the coins you put off buying keep slowly climbing? That the really nice bold VAM's gradually get included in the guidebooks? Let's see, an extra berry, unattached leaves, disappearing stems, lines in the arrowheads, and clear and distinct dots on the Obverse dies.....HMMM, sounds like a winner to me. With most melted, this is a rare and affordable Variety, not just a minor VAM.. As to the price, You probably wished that you had purchased the 1969 Double "S" lincoln long ago....Here you have a chance to purchase probably the only MS 65 17 Berry available for years to come, and once PCGS puts the 17 berry on the map (and how can they not) only 1 MS 65 registry set will be able to own this.JOHN I am selling numerous items from my father in law's coin, stamp and collectibles collection which he has assembled over 30 years. Please add our site to your favorites and request updates, as many more large cents, type coins, Canadian coins, and vf-xf centered US and Canadian stamps will be listed soon...
