Description
PITTSBURGH MAYSVILLE CINCINNATI RAILROAD document 1850s Shipping Info   Description Stock share subscription document for the Pittsburgh, Maysville & Cincinnati Railroad Company, to extend the RR south from McConnelsville, Morgan County, Ohio circa 1853-1856      This is an authentic railroad document, an unused stock-related subscription titled "Pittsburgh, Maysville and Cincinnati Railroad Company", with two decorative borders, slightly bluish gray paper, measuring roughly 7.25 by 4 inches, with uneven edges.       The text reads:      "I hereby subscribe (blank) shares of capital stock, each share being fifty dollars, to the Pittsburgh, Maysville and Cincinnati Railroad Company, to aid in extending said Railroad from McConnelsville, Morgan county, Ohio, in a southerly direction, to a point on some Railroad now being made, intersecting such Railroad at a point not further North than Logan, in Hocking county, and not further East than Amesville, in Athens county, Ohio.  Said point of intersection to be determined hereafter, by the Directors of this company.  Payment of stock to be in installments, not exceeding ten per cent on the amount subscribed; and on the condition that bona fide and responsible subscriptions or donations be made and secured to said company, in amount equal to six thousand dollars per mile of all that part of said proposed Railroad, lying between M'Connelsville and the point of intersection, (to be designated as mentioned above, applicable wholly to the location and construction of that portion of said proposed Railroad, before any part of this subscription shall be required or paid.      "(pointing hand) Route preferred. (blank line)".      No date, no watermark.       I found some information on the company online, and it seems that the project it refers to took place between 1853 and 1856:      The site (Heritagepursuit.com/Morgan/MorganIndex) mentions the formation of the Sharon Railroad Company in 1849, and the extensive project presented itself to the president and some of the directors in 1853 - "the extension of the road west of the river through the coalfields of Athens and Perry Counties. To effect this Mr. Parrish and Mr. Peacock advised with Mr. Gibson, a capitalist of Cincinnati, and a Mr. Whetstone, an engineer, who were projecting a road from Cincinnati on the river to a point opposite Maysville, Ky., and agreed with Gibson to continue their road west of the Muskingum through these coal-fields and connect with the Gibson road at the point opposite Maysville, with the specific name of the 'Pittsburgh, Maysville & Cincinnati Railroad' with the extension east of Cumberland to the Ohio".       Also: "The peculiar feature of the project (emanating from Parrish and Peacock) was for the company to issue bonds with which to build the ironworks, the payment to be secured by mortgage on the land; and to build the road, to issue bonds to be secured by mortgage on the road".       And also: "The company having on the 1st of March 1853 accepted the provisions of the law in the premises, the court of common pleas of Guernsey County on the 4th of April authorized and decreed a change of location, with the western terminus at Cincinnati and the eastern at the Ohio River, opposite the northwest corner of West Virginia, adjoining Pennsylvania, and changed the name of the corporation to 'The Pittsburgh, Maysville & Cincinnati Railroad Company'; also extending the time for building ten miles of road until March, 1856, and increasing the capital to $12,- 000,000".        And lastly: "Some other financial items and the condition of the road were given at the annual meeting of the stockholders in March, 1856, in Mr. Peacock's report, in which he says :'The estimates of the work done have varied from something less than ten thousand dollars to a little over thirty-five thousand per month. Twenty miles of roadway between Cumberland and the National almost ready for the superstructure'”.      Many light wrinkles, several small edge tears, small chips at bottom corners. Condition is Good.      (Transportation, Railroads, Trains, Railways, PM&C, Western Americana, Ohio, Local & Regional History, Historical Memorabilia & Souvenirs, Stocks, Money, Documents, Business & Industry, Construction, Paper & Ephemera).      We have many other auction items and a well-stocked eBay store - please Click Here to View Other Auctions.      PLEASE READ BEFORE BIDDING: Winning bidders will be automatically notified at the end of the auction.  I make an effort to communicate well with everyone;  I usually ship twice a week these days, and every item is guaranteed to be carefully and safely packed.       Shipping & handling for this item is $3.00 to anywhere in the U.S., though buyers in Alaska and Hawaii may want to request a faster option; insurance, delivery confirmation and other shipping extras must be requested by the winner.
