Description
1832 - 34 Philippines Counterstamp on an 1816 Peru Lima Mint Silver 4 Reales.  KM-43. Beginning around 1811, Spain began to have major problems with her colonies in the new world and by 1825 the revolutions were virtually complete in all of the Latin American countries.  The newly formed republics immediately began the process of minting their own coins, eliminating the portraits of the Spanish Kings and replacing the former designs with allegorical figures of Liberty and legends of Liberty, Justice and Virtue. Since payments for goods from the Far East were generally made in coinage from the mints of Latin America, the Spanish government in the Philippines had to contend with the circulation of coins from the upstart former colonies.  A decision was made by the government in Manila in 1828 to attempt to obliterate the total design of the offending coins, hence the appearance of the "Manila" counterstamp.  This process proved to be difficult and soon after the "Manila" counterstamp was replaced with a circular punch with a crowned F-7o for Ferdinand VII of Spain. The counterstamps of Ferdinand VII also served another purpose.  At that time in the Philippines, holed silver coins were quite common as it was customary to present a newly married couple with a gift of a quantity of Silver Coins strung on a cord.  The Philippines was suffering an acute shortage of circulating coinage, so the Ferdinand VII counterstamp was also used to rehabilitate the holed coins so that they could pass as legal tender.  Most of the Philippines counterstamps are found on the large Crown Size 8 Reales Silver Coins and on the 8 Reales the countermark was normally applied over the hole but on the smaller silver coins this was not practical so they were usually punched near the center of the small silver coins.  However as we said previously most of the Philippines counterstamps are found on 8 Reales and all of the counterstamped minor silver coins are rarities, in fact this coin is unpriced in the Krause catalog and listed there only as "Rare". .  The coin is about Good and the counterstamp is about Fine and must be considered a major rarity. The Rare Philippines Counterstamped Coin that we present here is the Ferdinand VII Counterstamp on an 1816 Peru Lima Mint  Silver 4 Reales.
