New York . 1935 Diameter - 68mm (about 2 3/4 inches); Diameter of Box - 76 mm (about 3 inches) This large and impressive bronze medal is the official commemorative medal for the inauguration voyage of the Ocean Liner "Normandie" in 1935. This medal is guaranteed original and authentic. On the edge is "BRONZE" and a "Cornucopia". This indicates that the medal was struck after 1880. These are the marks on the original medal. This is not a restrike, which have 1985 or later dates stamped on the edge. This medal is in exceptional condition with a light brown patina, in fact mint condition. The medal is in the original box, which has stamped on the cover "Compagnie Generale Transatlantique / French Line/ Normandie/ 1935. The box is slightly damaged and has some red ink over part of the date. This medal was engraved by Jean Vernon (1897-1975). He was a sculptor and a medallist. He first studied at the Ecole des Arts Decoratifs and at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux Arts in Paris. He was awarded the Honor Medal, Gold Medal and Silver Medal at the Salon des Artistes Francais. He won the Prix Taylor in 1957.
