Description
Set of 6 replica Mormon gold coins. These coins have "copy" on the edge as required by law and this auction site. They have "no" copy or replica stamped on the obverse or reverse to detract from their beauty. Members of the Mormon Battalion brought gold back from the California gold fields in 1849. President and Prophet of the LDS Church Brigham Young, his counselor John Taylor, and John Kay drew up the design for several denominations of gold coins. The original coins were minted in the Deseret Mint, which was located west of the old Hotel Utah on South Temple. Each of the four 1849 Mormon gold coins have the same design on the back. It is "Holiness to the Lord", a 3 pointed phrygian crown, and the all seeing eye. On the other side of the $2.50, $5.00, and the $20.00 is the denomination and 2 clasped hands, G.S.L.C.P.G. (Great Salt Lake City Pure Gold)and the date. The $10.00 has "Pure Gold Ten Dollars" spelled out. The original Mormon $20.00 gold coins were the first to be made in this country, even before the U.S. government made any $20.00 gold. This set of replica's is made of pure 24 Karat gold plated. Brilliant shiny surfaces. The $20.00 is 1 1/8 inches in diameter. The $10.00 is 1 inch, the $5.00 is 7/8 inch, and the $2.50 is 3/4 inch, the same size as the originals. The 1850 $5.00 gold coin is basically the same, except the date, and the design of the Phrygian Crown and the all-seeing eye are different. The 1860 $5.00 gold coin is the most beautiful. It has a lion on the front with the 1860 date and the lettering around the edge in the Deseret alphabet, which is "Holiness to the Lord". On the reverse is "Deseret Assay Office 5.D." and a beautiful eagle with the beehive (Utah state symbol of industry). Any of the real Mormon gold coins would cost thousands and would also be hard to acquire. Total mintages of all known real Mormon gold pieces is around 300. This is a wonderful way to acquire a set of these historical replica coins at a great price. . Powered by eBay Turbo Lister
