Modern United States Proof Coin Sets $19.95   Search Description      A Guide Book of  Modern United States Proof Coin Sets  $19.95                                                 This is  a new book that sells in stores for $19.95.This book is not mint but is in great shape. It has never been used .I listed additional information below about this item.Good luck and happy bidding.                  I bought my first Proof set in 1971,” says numismatic writer David W. Lange. “In fact, it was a 1971-S Proof set of five coins that I purchased for $5 exactly, and I’ve been on the United States Mint’s mailing list ever since.” In his detailed Guide Book of Modern United States Proof Coin Sets, Lange offers a definitive history of the U.S. Mint’s modern Proof sets—including a price guide to every set, silver and clad—starting in the mid-1930s. Lange studies each set, one by one, from the vintage years of 1936 to 1942, through the classic years of 1950 to 1964, the Special Mint Sets of 1965 to 1967, modern sets of 1968 to 1998, and the 50 State Quarters® Proof Sets starting in 1999. What makes Proof coin sets so fascinating? They offer the collector a chance to enjoy United States coins at their finest. Not surprisingly, they’ve recently reached new heights of popularity (more than 30 million sold since 2000)—but the fact is they’ve enjoyed a strong following for decades. Lange describes his reaction to that first Proof set back in 1971: “Even though I had been a collector of coins from circulation for a few years, I was dazzled by the brilliance and perfection of these five beauties. The attractive plastic case certainly added to their appeal. It was like a coin collection in itself—no album required.” The youngster Lange didn’t know it at the time, but by 1971 that plastic case was the evolutionary result of many years’ development. Proof sets of 1955 and earlier were packaged in small cardboard storage boxes. “They were pretty much do-it-yourself jobs as far as presentation was concerned,” Lange says. A local coin shop owner tipped Lange off to what he now calls the “great secret” to shopping for Proof sets: “Pssst! Look for the cameo!” In 1971 most Proof sets were still issued with a fully brilliant finish on both fields and devices. Only the lucky few received coins struck from fresh dies that had white frosting on the raised portions of the design. “Back then,” says Lange, “these coins were sought by a handful of pioneers.” Still a teenager, Lange didn’t have the means to travel to coin shows to shop for Proof sets, so, “I just rolled the dice each autumn by ordering next year’s set from the Mint.” He describes this pre-Internet era, without toll-free numbers and other modern conveniences: “Mailing-list customers such as myself received a rectangular data card with holes punched into it that would let the Mint’s mainframe computer know who I was when it received my order.” In addition to returning the card, he had to remove a series of tabs from another card that corresponded to the number of sets he was purchasing. All of this material—“along with a check made out by Mom,” he remembers—was mailed to the Mint’s order processing center in the Old San Francisco Mint Museum. Quite an involved process compared to today’s online click-and-order! “Many months would pass before my new set arrived by Registered Mail,” Lange says. “There was an unbearable sense of anticipation when ripping open the extremely secure cardboard box used for shipping. Would I have a cameo or not?” To his delight, the Mint of the 1970s began producing Proof coins that were likely to have at least some frosting on their devices most of the time. While the deep or ultra cameo contrast that we now take for granted didn’t appear until the end of the decade, “I was satisfied with most of the sets of my youth,” he says. Lange has dedicated his book “to those who are just now discovering the exciting hobby of collecting Proof sets, and to those who are old hands like myself.” A Guide Book of Modern United States Proof Coin Sets is completely illustrated with full-color and black-and-white photographs. It also includes: advice on collecting, storing, and displaying Proof coins retail values for certified and uncertified sets a study of U.S. Mint packaging over the years a date-by-date analysis of each Proof set, including historical values certified coin populations mintage and sales figures 20th-century Proof coin auction records “Collector’s Notebook” entries that put the coins in historical context Payment We will accept only these types of payments by Paypal,E-Check(no personal checks),.Please pay within 5 business days if using Paypal..This saves us time and allows us to ship the item a lot quicker.
