Description
Original 1880s U.S. Mint medalet of Lincoln and Grant. The Mint issued a variety of medals, many designed by Anthony Paquet, who left his mark on numerous simple but powerful numismatic treasures from the mint during his tenure. This is a silver proof, approximately 18.4mm medal that has heavy toning, obviously. What doesn't show in the scan is the nice underlying mirror finish and some iridescent blue color; we've handled several Paquet pieces and proof silver specimens and all have that trademark bit of color in the mirror field, even when the mirroring is covered nearly entirely (as here) by the also typical heavy toning. I'm not sure of the exact minting date, but the Lincoln with Grant was done, I believe, immediately after Grant's death in 1885. A bit of further mint research should add any additional information you might want. As our regular customers know, I spend a lot of time with a loupe looking, looking and looking some more--so you always hear about every little nuance (or flaw!) so nothing is missed. And in this case, it's interesting (to me!) that the planchet is quite uneven. At it's thickest, it measures about 1.0mm but at about 12:00 it is only .30mm thick! It is quite obvious to the naked eye, but wouldn't show in the scans, of course. Nothing to add or subtract value, but just a bit of added information. Overall, a really terrific piece--a 120-year-old silver proof from the U.S. Mint. SHIPPING: All of our lots are a flat $3.00 for first-class shipping and we combine to save the buyer shipping costs. INSURANCE: Insurance is optional but without it obviously the buyer is at risk should anything be lost or damaged in shipping. We bill the exact amount charged by your wonderful U.S. Postal System.... NON-US/CANADA TRANSACTIONS: We will always try to ship abroad, but you'll need to be patient, pay ONLY IN US FUNDS and have a solid ebay rating. It's not the customers who make us nervous, but the often unreliable postal systems outside the country. If you can pay with US funds, are fine with uninunsured shipping (or if you have suggestions for your country) and are not in a hurry, then by all means contact us and do bid on our merchandise. METHODS OF PAYMENT: We accept checks and money orders (personal, bank or business checks are just fine) but we do NOT use PayPal. FEEDBACK. We will always leave feedback, although we generally do many at once so we do not do it every day. Please be patient. If you have questions on our other ebay listings please ask. We've been on ebay almost 10 years and in business since 1979. With more than 4,000 net feedbacks, we're working hard to ensure everyone is pleased with what they purchase from us.
