The Republic of Ireland occupies over 80% of the island, with Northern Ireland, located on the North Eastern corner of the island, occupying the rest. Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom, and primarlly Protesant, while the Republic of Ireland is primarily Catholic. Ireland was under British domination from 1154, until it regained independence in 1921, following the fighting initiated by the Easter Sunday uprising in Dublin, in 1916. Ireland began to mint it's own coinage as an independent entity in 1928. This is an Early GEM 6 Pence dated 1934, made from nickel. The Irish coins from the Great Depression Era are VERY TOUGH TO FIND, ESPECIALLY IN HIGH GRADE, due to their low mintage figures, as well as the fact that they were heavily circulated. People could not afford to put coins aside, due to the economic conditions. This coin has GREAT DETAIL REMAINING with NO PROBLEMS, just VERY LIGHT honest even wear. It still has a lot of the ORIGINAL MINT LUSTRE REMAINING! This coin features the famous Irish Harp on the obverse, and an Irish Wolfhound, on the reverse.
