Description
Item Description This auction is for a set of four HMC stock certificates as shown in the picture, one orange, one green, one blue and one red. Certificates in this auction will be anywhere from the 1930’s up to the 1960’s. As can be seen in the pictures, these certificates are in excellent condition. The orange and green ones do not have any rusty staple spots and are in excellent condition. The red and blue one could have one or two rusty staple spots and some minor water damage. The red and blue certificates are a rare find on Ebay. Don't miss your chance to pick up a unique set of every color. This auction is offering 10 different sets of 4 certificates each set. Buy 1, 2, 3 or all 10 sets to add to or start your collection of HMC memoriabilia. There could be some very minor water damage on the very bottom of the orange and green certificates and can be seen in the photos. The red and blue certificates could have the same minor water damage and some rusty staple spots.  Remember that the red and blue ones are very limited in quantity. Some certificates can have trading information stapled to the back side. This information is also quite unique with bank or brokerage house names and signatures, personal investor signatures, trade history between other investors and occasionally tax stamps themselves. Beautifully engraved Stock certificate from the Homestake Mining Company issued from the 1870’s up to the 1960's for shares of Common Stock. This mining certificate has an ornate border around it with a classic vignette of two Indians overlooking a hillside with mountains, a river, train, bridge and ship in the background. It appears that they are cornered and nervous as the white man moved in and developed their land. See beautiful close-up photo of the vignette at the bottom of the listing. The certificates came in different colors to denote the different number of shares that the investor purchased. Orange and blue versions were issued for 100 shares and green ones for purchases of less than 100 shares. The number of shares purchased was marked on the right side of the certificate. There were also red and blue versions which seem to be quite rare. We found about one blue and red version for every 500 orange and green versions. Since this is a “Buy It Now” or "Dutch" auction with a large quantity of identical items, we use an image of the same type of certificate that is for sale. The certificate for sale will be the same in all material respects i.e. type, era, vignette, logo, condition, etc. auction is for a set of four certificates as shown in the picture, one orange, one green, one red and one blue. Certificates in this auction are from the 1930’s to 1960's. The red and blue ones are from the 1930's. These certificates were stored in a building that received some water damage from a leaky roof, thus the damage to the certificates. The photos show any type of blemishes. It is a minor detraction from a perfect certificate but not too bad for a highly collectable item such as these. The certificate for sale will be the same in all material respects i.e. type, era, vignette, logo, condition, etc. Company History Homestake began mining operations in 1877. In 1879, Homestake common stock was listed on the New York Stock Exchange where it has traded continuously since listing until Barrick Gold from Toronto purchased the company in 2001. This ended Homestake Mining Company’s run as the longest continuously listed company on the New York Stock Exchange. The Company's stock was also traded on the Australian Stock Exchange, the Swiss Stock Exchanges in Basel, Geneva and Zurich and on the over-the-counter markets in Frankfurt, Germany and Paris, France. Homestake purchased 50.6% of Prime Resources Group Inc. which was traded on the Toronto Stock Exchange and the Vancouver Stock Exchange in Canada. The Company was founded to develop the Homestake mine discovered in the Black Hills of the Dakota Territory in April of 1876 by Fred & Moses Manuel. The Homestake Mine located in Lead (pronounced Leed), South Dakota produced 40 million ounces from 1876 to 2002. It was Homestake Mining Company's largest producer. Operations consisted of an 8,000-foot deep underground mine, an open-pit mine, a mill and a gold refinery. The refinery had a noted hallmark stamp that was recognized anywhere in the world. It was one of five stamps worldwide with this honor during its production years. This meant that you could take your HMC stamped bar of gold to any world market, New York, Hong Kong, London, etc and you would get paid the daily price fix for your gold bar without any type of assay or further proof that it was genuine. Another tribute to the Homestake mine was that it was where cyanide leaching was introduced and put into large scale production. This process was perfected by “Cyanide Charlie” – Charles Merrill. His process is still used around the world today and known as the Merrill-Crowe process. Collectible Certificates Please note that we are selling an authentic stock certificate as a collectible. They have no company value. About Us I’m a Black Hills native and worked at the Homestake Mine from 1991 until closure. I was fortunate enough to have worked throughout the mine. Duties from mucking the “piss ditch” on the 8000’ level to pouring gold in the refinery and everything else in between. These 100% guaranteed authentic certificates were kept at the mine’s general office in downtown Lead, SD. After mine closure was announced and reclamation started, a storage room was found full of these cancelled stock certificates. Rather than watch them get hauled to the landfill, I gathered some up knowing that many people would love to add some to their scripophily collection. The sale of these certificates is serving many functions. It’s funding my son’s kart racing fund, you can never have enough money in a race account!!! It is also teaching him some entrepreneur skills and funding his Subaru SVX account. Buy these certificates from us knowing they came directly from one of the last HMC employees and the home of the Homestake Mine – the greatest historic gold mine in the world.     Good Luck Bidding!
