Description
Kingdom of Hawaii Hapa Haneli (misspelled “Haneri” on the die) or Cent, struck in 1847 under contract to H. M. & E. I. Richards of Attleboro, Mass. Not terribly popular in the islands due to the spelling error and poor rendering of the King’s portrait. Commonly found damaged from circulation or burial as circulated coins, most Unc examples are either dark and brown, or heavily spotted due to saltwater damage. This example is a pleasant exception. Graded MS63RB by NGC, the coin retains about half of the original Red, substantially more than the usual “RB”. It also has good luster and a relatively few small spots. Copper is notoriously difficult to image properly, especially in a NGC holder (due to reflection from the flat plastic panels on the slab) – I have included multiple images to try to help bidders get a better idea of what the coin looks like. If these are not sufficient, PLEASE LET ME KNOW. From an old time collection, this has been in a bank vault for at least 30 years till it’s recent certification. My guess is that this coin may well be from the group that Wayte Raymond purchased from those saved as “samples” by the descendents of the Richards firm, as the overall quality is superior to most BU examples that made it to Hawaii. In any case, the Opening Bid represents my estimate of an equitable value for the coin, plus a bit for fees. Similar coins have been selling for a few dollars less or more at auction in the last couple of years. Anyone having a serious disagreement with my estimation is free to contact me with a counteroffer. Also, due to the expense of fees, NO PAYPAL on this lot - sorry. Your personal or business check is fine. If you have any questions about this lot, PLEASE email no less than 36 hours before close of auction to assure a response - we keep normal business hours. Shipping: Winning bidder will pay $15.00 S&H to U.S. addresses for Registered Mail. Outside the US: Shipping by Registered Mail ONLY; please contact me for a quote or use the USPS Calculator online. Your satisfaction is guaranteed. We have a heritage to 1937, and loads of good eBay Feedback where I have been selling since 1997. Good Luck & Good Hunting! Tipsico Coin, Corvallis, Oregon.
