Description
Greek Gold Stater of Philip II of Macedon, 359-336 BC, father of Alexander The Great. Whilst the title of "military genius of all times" deservedly goes to his son Alexander The Great, conqueror of the known world at the time, Philip did not fall much behind in military genius. In fact he amassed a powerful empire and was getting ready to take on the Persians as the world biggest superpower of the times, when he died suddenly and his son Alexander had to finish off the job! A fantastic example of Greek masterpiece coinage. One side depicts the laurelled head of Apollo facing to the right, beautifully rendered curly hair. On the reverse there is a galloping biga driven by a charioteer holding goad. The Greek inscription "Of Philip" above. Diameter: 3/4 inch. Weight: 8.5 gm See Seaby 661-3. This is one of the most famous Greek coins, widely circulated in Europe and extensively copied by the Celts and used on their coinage, albeit bearing little resemblence to the Greek original! Old English collection. This coin is in outstanding condition. Shipping UK $9, Europe $12 USA $15 We guarantee our items to be authentic. If they are proven otherwise by a recognised authority we will refund all monies on return of the item accompanied by a written statement from such authority.Returned items must be CLEARLY labelled RETURN
