Such was the prestige in producing the Queen’s Gold coinage that very few errors exist.  Only a decade ago a startling discovery was made - an 1880 Sydney Shield Reverse Gold Sovereign with the V of Victoria in the obverse legend being an inverted A. This is quite incredible as this remarkable error had not been sighted previously despite the coin been struck more than 100 years ago! The discovery of the error received much publicity and was written up in the February 1998 issue of Coin and Banknote magazine. It is now listed in McDonald (page 63 of the 15th Edition). McDonald records around 10 known. The example I offer this month is one of the best. Grade: gVF/aEF McDonald catalogue value is VF $8,000.00, EF $11,000.00.  A tremendous coin for the collector of Australian Rarities. Compare it to a 1930 Penny. This coin is more than 100 times rarer yet is 1/3 of the price.
