Description
The Auction: This Auction is for a 1976 Gold Plated Bicentennial Medal and a 1936 Gold Plated Buffalo nickel as well as some international currency from the 1960 Vietnamese 1 DONG, Israeli 10 New Sheqalim, and a Japanese 1 Yen. I apologize for the quality of the images. The 1976 Gold Plated Bicentennial Medal is uncirculated and has never been out of it's protective plastic case, so I'm not really 100% that it's gold-plated and the thick plastic protector has a slight hairine crack on the front statue of liberty side. The front is a beautiful engraving of the statue of liberty by Frank Gasparro of the US Mint with 1776 to the left of lady liberty and 1976 to the right of her and just below is the motto: "LIFE, LIBERTY AND THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS". On the other side is the US Seal eagle with olive branches and arrows and the words circling around the edge "AMERICAN REVOLUTION BICENTENNIAL * WE THE PEOPLE *". The 1976 National Bicentennial Medal comes in a formal wood case with suede-esque lining where the coin lies; on the inside of top is a white satin-esque lining with the words "THE NATIONAL BICENTENNIAL MEDAL". I'm still looking for the certificate of authentication that came with the medal originally. The 1936 Buffalo Nickel has been circulated as is shown by obvious signs of wear on the surface, however all features are still visible and the coin is fairly clean. The images of the coin outside the cardboard are representative only - the coin has been in a protective covering of plastic and white cardboard for as long as I've had it (over 20 years). The Front of the 1936 Buffalo Nickel is an engraving of the head of a Native American, designed by James Earle Fraser of the US Mint, with the date '1936' clearly visible at the base and the word "LIBERTY" on the diameter of the coin where the eyes and nose are; an American Bison (Buffalo) is on the other side with the words "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM" above it and the words "FIVE CENTS" below. I believe, because of the marking 'P' on the cardboard protector, that this nickel was Philadelphia mint. Remember - you dont HAVE to 'Buy It Now' there's always bidding and half the proceeds go to charity!
