Description
COMMUNION TOKEN / CANADA: QUEBEC 1831 (ST. JOHN'S CHURCH) Charlton-CE-240A (Canada East), Cresswell-5068, Bowman-32, Burzinski-5784, EF-40 All communion tokens are rare or very rare. This is because, for the most part, each church, first in Scotland, then in other countries, had its own special token so that its members could be identified and all others (especially in times of religious strife) could be excluded from holy communion. Communion was a special event, usually held several times a year and not every Sunday. As the Scots moved to other countries, they took the practice with them. The earliest tokens were made of lead, then white metal (usually alloys of tin ) although some later tokens are known in other metals, even silver. In his book, Mr. Burzinski listed 7726 different tokens, the vast majority from Scotland. In her book on U. S. Communion tokens, Mrs. A. Bason listed a mere 436 different tokens. Using these numbers as a rough guide to rarity, only about 5.6% of the communion tokens that exist today would be from the United States. Communion tokens from Canada are even rarer than those from the USA, with only about 300 listed in books on world communion tokens, for example written by O.D. Cresswell or in the Burzinski update. Using the number of listings as a measure of those that might exist today, for Canada, the number drops to 3.9%. Insurance is available at the actual USPS charge (e.g., up to $50 = $1.70; $50.01-$100 = $2.15; $100.01-$200 = $2.60, etc.) USA buyers may pay by PayPal***, check or money order. Please request an invoice if you want to combine items or have insurance added. If you use eBay checkout, you may be overcharged! For buyers outside the USA, shipping is the estimated actual cost (usually International First Class, but other higher cost options may be suggested if your combined order is large and valuable) plus $4.00 packing charge; insurance is not available and the BUYER ASSUMES ALL RISK OF LOSS AND MAY HAVE TO PAY AN ADDITIONAL CUSTOMS CHARGE. (Some buyers outside the USA get protection when they use PayPal.) Non-USA buyers may combine items (listed starting September 2, 2008, and starting for 3 DAYS after) but should wait for an INVOICE to be sent. Buyer's outside the USA must pay by PayPal***. Don't use eBay check-out. It is best to request an invoice. ***To qualify for a shipping discount, buyers who pay by PayPal must make a single payment, so please wait until all the items you are bidding on have been sold. You may request your invoice at any time if you no longer plan to bid on additional items in a series. Thank you. We have been selling exonumia to collectors since 1984. www.cdgale.com GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT COMMUNION TOKENS: http://www.tmethvin.com/methvin/methven_church_token.html Note: The book by Cresswell has now been superceded by the Burzinski book. The prices are out of date, also. It would be hard to find a Scottish Communion Token at only USD 5! Some may be wondering why we are not selling Scottish Communion Tokens on eBay. We are all sold out, except for 4 large group lots (almost all ex-Burzinski) now being offered on the current Heritage Token and Medal Sale (lots 28680, 28681, 28682, 28685); in the past, Heritage has allowed eBay bidding in their live sales. Check www.ha.com for details. Thanks.
