These signs also appeared nationally along other American roadways from 1927 to 1963. By 1942 the BURMA-SHAVE signs had become one of the most successful advertising campaigns in American history with over 7000 sets of signs and 600 different slogans.The verses were usually posted on six signs, but some, (a little know fact) would take seven signs.They were placed along the roadsides, usually in a farmers field, with the last sign always reading BURMA-SHAVE. The signs were red with white gothic letters (although until 1931 some were orange and black.)They measured 3 foot by 10 inches, with 4- inch letters and were spaced 10-50 yards apart lengthening as cars became faster. The boards were held on to the nine foot steel posts with a special bolt set-up discouraging all but the most hardened souvenir hunters from stealing them. They would be buried 3 feet into the ground. The installers would travel the country every summer repairing, and replacing old signs, or installing the new verses. The company referred to these installers as qualified Phd's (post hole diggers).The farmers whose land the signs appeared on would sign a contract and be paid $5-$25 with a good spot going for $50 a year. Spots had to be level with no hills or curves for the duration of the signs.The initial sign investment in 1925 was $200 and by 1963 the company was spending over $200,000 a year on the signs.  Flat rate S&H is $3.50 and includes Insurance.Copyright 2005 K & L Enterprises.
