This historic document has an ornate border around it with 10 vignettes of shipping merchants, George Washington, Blacksmith, William Penn, Steam Engine, Allegorical women, Ben Franklin, and more. This item is hand signed by the Controller and Treasurer, seal stamp has made holes in signatures.  Amount with interest is written on back.  Small tear at center of Document.  Approx 14" x 9". Document states: "City of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, Loan of the City of Philadelphia.  Certificat no 9926, six per cent loan.  This Certifies that there is due to William J Wainwright Treasurer by the City of Philadlphia, Thirty Eight Thousand Six Hundred Dollars with interest at the rate of six per centum per annum, payable half yearly, on the first days of January and July.  The principle not reimbursable, without consent of the owner hereof, before the first day of July 1886.  This Certificate shall be transferable at the Office of the City Treasureer by the owner in person, or by attorney, upon the surrender thereof to the Treasurer.  In Witness whereof, the Treasurer of the said City has hereunto set his hand, and caused the Seal of the City of Philadelphia, to be hereunto annexed the Eighteenth Day of September 1856 and the Controller has attested the same on the same day and year."
