Description
This is a genuine eight reale from the most famous galleon of them all, the Nuestra Senora de Atocha, which was sunk by a hurricane off the coast of Key West in September, 1622. The coin was minted at the Potosi Mint by the famed dyslexic assayer Juan Ximenez de Tapia, who made a lot of errors and reversals in the minting of his coins. This one has three easily identifiable errors. The first is the reversed "P" mintmark to the left of the shield of Phillip III of Spain on the obverse. The second is a top of the shield reversal, where the cross of Naples and Sicily has been transposed with the lions and castles of Leone and Castille. This is rare. In addition, the lions and castles in Leone and Castile have also been reversed. This is an extremely rare reversal. Finally there is the more common lion and castle reversal on the reverse in the Crusader's Cross. Coins with four errors by Tapia are Extremely Rare. My wife has one that has five reversals, but it took me nearly 30 years to find it. The coin is a grade two because of the seawear on it. Grade two coins are currently selling for $1800 and up at the museum, and that is not for one that has these many errors. Also, I have heard that they had a price increase two weeks ago, and I am sure that the price didn't drop. This coin is accompanied with the original certificate of authenticity with Mel Fisher's printed signature and seal. Don't miss the opportunity to own such a rare coin.
