The Sassanians, who revived the Archaemenid tradition and re-established Zoroastrianism as the state religion, were the last dynasty of native rulers to reign in Persia (now Iran) before the Arab conquest, around 640. The name Sassanian comes from Sassan, ancestor of Ardashir I, who founded the dynasty and reigned from 224-240. Photo is of actual coin Reference: Sellwood - An Introduction to Sasanian Coins by D.
